Pre-Marital Consultation

Partners preparing for marriage may find that premarital consulting can help them better understand their expectations about marriage and address any significant differences in a safe and neutral environment. Premarital consulting can help partners identify areas likely to cause conflict later on. These may include but are not limited to finances, child-rearing methods, career goals, spirituality, family dynamics, and intimacy.

Pre-marriage is an ideal time to learn intimately about each other, have conversations and work through any issues. A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology showed that couples who had participated in some type of premarital consulting program were 31% less likely to fail.

How Premarital Consulting Helps Couples

Premarital consulting helps couples understand and plan for marriages that will glorify God. It also helps couples set reasonable expectations for each other and for married life. An important part of premarital consulting is getting the couple to have serious conversations about their upcoming marriage. The tendency is for engaged couples to avoid the tough stuff because they don’t want to think about it. But marriages are filled with challenges. If you avoid these challenges early on, they will resurface later on down the road.

Faith-based premarital consulting explores each person’s faith and history. It helps the couple examine personal convictions, expectations for their future, and responsibilities they will have. More than anything, premarital consulting aims to produce a marriage that is biblical and God honoring.

  1. It helps build a solid foundation for marriage. We will spend time in scripture looking at how biblical ideas apply to marriage.

  2. It helps couples begin a dialogue. Topics like communication, finances, sex, and parenting should be discussed before marriage.

  3. It points out areas of concern in the relationship. No relationship is perfect. Potential problems, conflicts, and struggles should be addressed in the beginning as to be handled properly together.

  4. It preserves couples from temptation.

  5. It prepares couples for the marriage and not just the wedding day.
